Managing Your Subjects
How to add, organize, and optimize the subjects you teach to attract more students.
The subjects you list determine who finds you in search results. Be strategic about which subjects to add and how to describe them.
Adding Subjects
How to Add a Subject
Go to Profile Settings
Dashboard > Profile > Edit Listing
Click Add Subject
Under the Subjects section
Select Subject Category
Choose from dropdown (Math, Science, Language Arts, etc.)
Specify Subject Details
- Exact subject name (e.g., "Algebra 2")
- Grade level(s)
- Difficulty level
- Special topics
Save Changes
Subject appears on your listing immediately
Subject Structure
Be specific, not generic:
❌ Too broad:
- Math
- Science
- Test Prep
✅ Specific and searchable:
- Algebra 1 (Grades 8-9)
- AP Chemistry
- SAT Math (1400+ target score)
Subject Categories
Choose from:
- Mathematics - Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Statistics
- Science - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science
- Language Arts - English, Reading, Writing, Literature
- Foreign Languages - Spanish, French, Mandarin, etc.
- Test Prep - SAT, ACT, AP, GRE, MCAT, LSAT
- Computer Science - Programming, Web Dev, Data Science
- Business - Economics, Accounting, Finance, Marketing
- Arts - Music Theory, Art History, Drawing
- Other - Study Skills, College Admissions, etc.
Optimizing Subject Listings
Include Grade Levels
Why it matters: Students search by grade level, not just subject
Examples:
- "Algebra 1 (Middle School)"
- "Algebra 1 (High School)"
- "College Algebra"
- "Remedial Algebra (Adult Learners)"
These appear as different listings in search.
Add Topic Details
For each subject, list specific topics you cover:
Subject: AP Calculus AB/BC
Topics I cover:
- Limits and Continuity
- Derivatives (all methods)
- Applications of Derivatives
- Integrals (Riemann sums, FTC)
- Applications of Integrals
- Differential Equations
- Sequences and Series (BC only)
- Parametric and Polar (BC only)
Benefits:
- Students know exactly what you teach
- Improves search ranking
- Sets clear expectations
- Demonstrates expertise
Subject Descriptions
Write 1-2 paragraphs about your approach to each subject:
Subject: SAT Math Prep
Description: "I help students raise their SAT Math scores through targeted practice and test-taking strategies. We'll identify your weak areas, build foundational skills, then practice with real SAT questions. My students typically improve 100-150 points in 8-10 sessions.
My approach emphasizes understanding concepts deeply rather than memorizing formulas. We'll work on timing strategies, avoiding common traps, and building confidence. I provide practice problems and full practice tests for homework."
Subject Strategy
Primary vs Secondary Subjects
Primary subjects (1-3):
- Your main expertise
- What you're most qualified to teach
- Where you want most bookings
Secondary subjects (3-8):
- Subjects you can teach well
- Fill availability gaps
- Attract broader audience
Avoid:
- Adding subjects you're not confident teaching
- Listing 15+ subjects (looks unfocused)
Quality over quantity: 5 well-described subjects beat 15 generic listings.
Niche vs Broad Strategy
Niche specialist:
- Focus on 2-3 related subjects
- Deep expertise
- Premium pricing
- Attract serious, motivated students
Example: "AP Calculus AB/BC specialist"
Generalist:
- Teach 8-12 subjects
- Broader appeal
- More bookings
- May need to prepare more
Example: "All high school math subjects"
Start niche, expand gradually: Build reputation in one area, then add related subjects.
Subject-Specific Rates
Charge different rates for different subjects:
Rate structure:
- Algebra 1: $50/hour
- Geometry: $50/hour
- Pre-Calculus: $60/hour
- AP Calculus: $75/hour
- SAT Math: $80/hour
Justification:
- Advanced subjects require more expertise
- Test prep more specialized and valuable
- Reflects market demand
Set in: Profile > Subjects > [Select Subject] > Custom Rate
Seasonal Subjects
Some subjects have seasonal demand:
High demand periods:
- SAT/ACT Prep - March-June, September-December
- AP Subjects - January-May
- Finals Help - May, December
- Summer School - June-August
Strategy:
- Add these subjects 2 months before peak
- Raise rates during peak demand
- Pause or lower rates off-season
- Mark as "Limited availability" to create urgency
Subject Credentials
Boost credibility by adding subject-specific credentials:
For each subject, add:
- Degrees - "BA in Mathematics"
- Test scores - "SAT Math: 800"
- Certifications - "CA Teaching Credential (Math)"
- Experience - "5 years teaching AP Chemistry"
- Results - "Students avg 4.2 on AP exam"
How to add:
- Edit subject
- Click "Add Credential"
- Upload verification (optional)
Managing Your Subject List
Organizing Subjects
Order subjects by:
- Drag and drop to reorder
- Most important subjects first
- Related subjects grouped together
Display order matters:
- First 3 subjects shown prominently
- Others appear under "More subjects"
Pausing a Subject
Temporarily stop accepting students:
- Edit subject
- Toggle "Accepting new students" to OFF
- Subject grayed out, existing students unaffected
Use when:
- Fully booked in that subject
- Taking a break
- Seasonal subject out of season
Removing a Subject
Permanently delete a subject:
- Edit subject
- Click "Remove Subject"
- Confirm deletion
Careful: Removing a subject deletes all subject-specific content (description, credentials, reviews attached to it). Can't be undone.
Transferring Students
If removing a subject but have active students:
- Message students about the change
- Help them find a new tutor
- Complete any committed sessions
- Then remove subject
Subject Search Optimization
Keywords
Include searchable terms:
- Official names (AP, IB, SAT, etc.)
- Common abbreviations (Calc, Chem, Bio)
- Related terms (Algebra II, Algebra 2)
- Grade levels (9th grade, freshman)
Updates Trigger Algorithm
Search algorithm favors:
- Recently updated subjects
- Subjects with complete descriptions
- Subjects with credentials
- Actively booked subjects
SEO tip: Update your subject descriptions every 2-3 months to stay current in search.
Subject Performance Analytics
Track which subjects generate bookings:
View analytics: Dashboard > Analytics > Subject Performance
Metrics shown:
- Views - How many students viewed this subject
- Inquiries - Messages about this subject
- Bookings - Sessions booked for this subject
- Conversion rate - Inquiries that became bookings
Use data to:
- Double down on high-performing subjects
- Improve or remove low-performing ones
- Adjust pricing based on demand
- Update descriptions for better conversion
Common Mistakes
Mistake: Adding every subject you've ever studied Fix: Focus on subjects you're confident teaching NOW
Mistake: Vague descriptions like "I teach this subject well" Fix: Specific topics, grade levels, and outcomes
Mistake: Not updating subjects as you gain experience Fix: Regularly add credentials and update descriptions
Mistake: Same rate for all subjects regardless of difficulty Fix: Price based on subject complexity and demand
Best Practices
Demonstrate expertise: For each subject, include specific examples of topics you've taught
Update regularly: Refresh descriptions quarterly to stay current in search
Group related subjects: Organize logically (Algebra 1 → Geometry → Algebra 2)
Use student language: Write descriptions in terms students search for
