Creating Your Tutor Listing

Step-by-step guide to building a compelling tutor profile that attracts students.

Last updated this week

Your tutor listing is your storefront on Sentuent. A well-crafted listing helps you stand out and attract the right students. Here's how to create one that converts.

Before You Start

Gather these materials:

  • Professional photo - Clear headshot, well-lit
  • Credentials - Degrees, certificates, test scores
  • Teaching experience - Years, number of students, results
  • Sample topics - Specific subjects you can teach

Creating Your Listing

Step 1: Basic Information

1

Navigate to Profile

Dashboard > Profile > Create Tutor Listing

2

Upload Photo

Choose a professional, friendly headshot

3

Write Your Headline

One sentence that captures your expertise

4

Choose Primary Subject

Your main area of expertise

Headline examples:

  • ✅ "MIT Math Grad | 5+ Years Tutoring Calculus & Stats"
  • ✅ "SAT/ACT Prep Specialist | Students Average 200pt Improvement"
  • ✅ "PhD Physicist Teaching High School & College Physics"
  • ❌ "Math Tutor" (too generic)
  • ❌ "Available for tutoring" (no value proposition)

Step 2: About You

Write your bio - this is your most important marketing copy.

Structure your bio:

Paragraph 1: Credentials & Experience Start with your strongest qualification and teaching experience.

"I'm a certified math teacher with 8 years of classroom experience and a Master's in Mathematics Education from Stanford. I've tutored over 200 students, helping them improve their grades by an average of 1.5 letter grades."

Paragraph 2: Teaching Approach Explain how you teach and what makes you different.

"My approach focuses on building deep conceptual understanding rather than memorization. I use real-world examples and visual aids to make complex topics accessible. Each session is tailored to your learning style and goals."

Paragraph 3: Results & Specialties Share outcomes and what you're best at.

"I specialize in helping students who struggle with algebra and calculus. My students consistently report feeling more confident and prepared for exams. Many have gone on to excel in STEM majors."

Paragraph 4: Call to Action Invite students to reach out.

"Let's work together to achieve your math goals. Send me a message and we'll discuss your needs and create a personalized learning plan."

Bio best practices:

Be specific: Instead of "I'm good at math," say "I specialize in AP Calculus AB/BC and have helped 50+ students earn 4s and 5s"

Show results: Include concrete outcomes like grade improvements or test score gains

Write conversationally: Use "I" and "you" - you're talking to a potential student

Proofread: Grammar errors hurt credibility, especially for language tutors

Length: 200-400 words is ideal. Long enough to build trust, short enough to hold attention.

Step 3: Education & Credentials

Add your educational background:

Required:

  • Degree type (Bachelor's, Master's, PhD, etc.)
  • Field of study
  • Institution name
  • Graduation year

Optional but recommended:

  • GPA (if 3.5+)
  • Relevant coursework
  • Honors or awards
  • Upload degree image

Other credentials:

  • Teaching certifications
  • Professional licenses
  • Relevant test scores (SAT, GRE, MCAT, etc.)
  • Certificates from courses or training

Strong credentials section:

  • Master's in Mathematics, Stanford University (2018)
  • Bachelor's in Math Education, UCLA (2016) - Summa Cum Laude
  • California Teaching Credential (Mathematics)
  • SAT Math: 800, GRE Quant: 170

Step 4: Teaching Experience

Detail your tutoring and teaching background:

Include:

  • Years of experience
  • Number of students taught
  • Age groups or grade levels
  • Teaching settings (classroom, private tutoring, online)
  • Notable achievements

Example:

8 years of teaching experience:
- 5 years as high school math teacher (Algebra through Calculus)
- 3 years private tutoring (50+ students)
- 2 years online tutoring
- Specialize in grades 9-12 and college freshmen
- 95% of AP Calc students earned 4 or 5

Step 5: Subjects You Teach

Add all subjects you can tutor (detailed in Managing Subjects).

Key points:

  • List specific topics, not just broad subjects
  • Include grade levels or difficulty
  • Note any specializations

Step 6: Teaching Philosophy

Optional but impactful section.

Answer these questions:

  • What do you believe about learning?
  • How do you structure lessons?
  • What's your approach to struggling students?
  • What makes your teaching unique?

Example teaching philosophy:

"I believe every student can excel in math with the right support and approach. I customize each session to your learning style - whether you're visual, auditory, or hands-on. We'll start by identifying gaps in foundational knowledge, then build up to more advanced concepts. I encourage questions and create a judgment-free space where it's okay to make mistakes and learn from them."

Step 7: Pricing

Set your hourly rate (detailed in Setting Your Rate).

Factors to consider:

  • Your experience and credentials
  • Subject difficulty
  • Market rates in your area
  • Your availability and demand

Step 8: Availability

Set when you're available to tutor:

  • Regular weekly hours
  • Special availability for trials or consultations
  • Buffer time between sessions

See Managing Your Availability for details.

Step 9: Lesson Structure

Describe what a typical session looks like:

Example lesson structure:

Typical 60-minute session:
1. Review (10 min) - Check homework, answer questions
2. New content (25 min) - Introduce new topic with examples
3. Practice (20 min) - Work problems together
4. Summary (5 min) - Recap and assign practice

This helps students know what to expect.

Step 10: Trial Sessions

Decide if you offer trial sessions:

  • Yes - Great for attracting new students
  • No - You're established and don't need to offer trials

Trial session options:

  • Free 30-minute consultation
  • Half-price first session
  • Full-price session with satisfaction guarantee

Trials work: Tutors offering trials get 3x more bookings initially and can convert 70%+ to regular students.

Step 11: Policies

Set clear expectations:

Cancellation policy:

  • How much notice required?
  • Refund or reschedule?
  • Your policy for emergencies

Homework policy:

  • Do you assign homework?
  • How much time should students spend?

Materials policy:

  • What should students bring?
  • Do you provide materials?

Communication policy:

  • When will you respond to messages?
  • Can students ask questions between sessions?

Making Your Listing Stand Out

Add Multimedia

Video introduction (highly recommended):

  • Record 60-90 second intro video
  • Introduce yourself and teaching style
  • Show your teaching space
  • Listings with videos get 5x more views

Portfolio/samples:

  • Upload sample lesson materials
  • Share student success stories (with permission)
  • Include worksheets or study guides you've created

Specializations & Badges

Earn badges to boost credibility:

  • Top Rated - 4.8+ average rating with 20+ reviews
  • Verified Credentials - Uploaded and verified degrees
  • 🎓 Subject Expert - Passed subject mastery test
  • Quick Responder - Responds within 2 hours on average
  • 💯 Student Favorite - 95%+ recommend rate

Optimize for Search

Students search by:

  1. Subject - Make sure subjects are specific
  2. Grade level - Tag appropriate levels
  3. Availability - Keep calendar updated
  4. Price - Be competitive in your range

SEO tips:

  • Use subject keywords naturally in your bio
  • Include grade levels and test names (SAT, ACT, etc.)
  • Mention specific topics students search for
  • Update your listing regularly (triggers search algorithm)

Preview & Publish

Preview Your Listing

Before publishing:

  1. Click "Preview" to see student view
  2. Check for typos or formatting issues
  3. Verify all links work
  4. Test on mobile device
  5. Get feedback from a friend

Questions to ask:

  • Is it clear what I teach?
  • Do my credentials inspire confidence?
  • Is my rate justified by my experience?
  • Would I book a session based on this?

Publish Your Listing

  1. Review completeness (aim for 100%)
  2. Click "Publish Listing"
  3. Your listing goes live immediately
  4. You'll start appearing in search results

Incomplete listings: Listings under 70% complete get deprioritized in search. Complete all sections for best results.

Improve performance:

  • Low views? Improve SEO, add subjects

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake: Generic bio like "I teach math and am very experienced" Fix: Specific details: "10 years teaching AP Calc, 200+ students, 90% earn 4+"

Mistake: No credentials or vague education Fix: Upload degree images, list specific qualifications

Mistake: Pricing too high or too low without justification Fix: Research competitors, price based on experience

Mistake: Outdated availability or subjects Fix: Review and update weekly
